Writings [by Todo YOSHIMASU]
These are writings by Todo YOSHIMASU[吉益,東洞] regarding his theory of body fluid pathology, namely that all diseases are caused by one poison, .which he no doubt transmitted to his pupils. He expounded the theory that body fluid becomes poison upon becoming stagnant, that all diseases and symptoms are related to or derived from this poison, and that an external evil not accompanied by this poison would cause no illness though it may attack.
Nangai YOSHIMASU[吉益,南涯] (1749-1813), his son, modified this theory and advanced the concept of spiritual matter, blood, and water.
According to his theory, water exists near the surface of the body and blood in the deep region. The spiritual matter is formed in the stomach from food, reaches the heart and blood and water are circulated throughout the body by spiritual matter. It was maintained that poison develops when this circulation ceases or reverses or becomes excessive or insufficient. That is, he established the theory of body fluid circulation.
